AAA Home Improvements is a Denver design-build general contractor. Toby Hertel has owned it since 2004, and the work has stayed deliberately narrow: the structural jobs where the expensive surprises live.

He grew up working and operating a family ranch in Central Montana, and took a Bachelor of Science from Montana State in 1998. Six years in residential and commercial construction followed — custom homes, commercial buildings and underground fibre optics — before heavy civil work brought him to Colorado, doing field engineering on E-470 and the Northwest Parkway.
That is an unusual route into residential remodelling, and it shows in what AAA is good at. Highway and heavy-civil work is a discipline about structures that have to survive weather and pass inspection. It is not a background in finishes. It is a background in whether the thing stands up.
Design, engineering, permitting and construction under one roof and one agreement.
The reason that matters is not tidiness. It is what happens the day something is discovered behind a wall. On a split team — one designer, one engineer, one builder, three contracts — that discovery becomes a change order, a delay and an argument about whose drawing was wrong. Here there is nobody to hand it to. It is our problem, and it gets solved on site.
That is an existing house being underpinned to basement level, pit by pit, in sequence. It is the least photogenic thing on this website and the most useful. Ask any contractor bidding your addition to show you theirs.
Four kinds of work, and we will tell you if yours is not one of them.
- Structural remodels. Load-bearing walls, beams, shoring and foundations under an existing house.
- Additions on existing foundations. Room additions, bump-outs and ground-level extensions, including underpinning where the grade demands it.
- Second storeys and pop-tops. Building up when the lot will not let you build out, on houses that were framed for one floor.
- Ground-up custom homes. Lot evaluation through permitting to handover.
We do not take standalone bathrooms, and we are not the right firm for a cosmetic refresh. Those are good jobs for someone else, and saying so early is cheaper for both of us than saying it in month two.
